About the event

Join us for the opening of ‘Tearing Field’ by Betty Russ on Friday, 31 July, from 6–8pm.

In ‘Tearing Field’, Betty Russ imagines a small ecology shaped by mutation, adaptation and survival. Water circulates through a plastic pond. Air is pushed through translucent veins. Plants breathe. Fungi spread. Artificial structures shelter living ones until the difference between the natural and the constructed begins to shift.

The exhibition takes inspiration from fasciation, an abnormal plant growth in which a stem, flower or root becomes flattened, fused or ribbon-like. A flower abandoning symmetry. A stem multiplying into impossible forms. Growth exceeding the shape it was given. Image: Betty Russ, 'A Leakage of Wholes' 2022, installation detail at Metro Arts, Photographed by Louis Lim
